Exploring invention through debate and engineering
Secondary Science Week 2026 gave SBS Bangkok Year 7 and Year 8 students the opportunity to explore invention, innovation and creative problem-solving through hands-on challenges and thoughtful debate.
Students began by considering one big question: what is the greatest invention of all time? Through The Great Debate: Wheel vs. Language, they explored how invention shapes human progress, communication, civilisation and the way we understand the world.
They then moved into engineering challenges through Rube Goldberg machines, designing creative chain reactions to complete everyday tasks.
Year 7 students created Breakfast Bots, while Year 8 students developed Automatic Organisers, applying scientific thinking through force, motion, energy, testing and refinement.
The week culminated in live demonstrations, where students explained the scientific principles behind their designs and showed their machines in action. Science Week was a reminder that innovation begins with curiosity, but grows through collaboration, resilience and the courage to keep improving an idea.
