Using language with purpose and cultural understanding

Mandarin becomes more meaningful when students have a real reason to use the language.

Across two recent Mandarin learning activities, students explored language through hands-on cultural experiences connected to Chinese everyday life and social traditions.

One highlight was a Mahjong-themed session, where students learned to recognise characters, follow basic game rules and communicate with one another while playing.

More than just a game, Mahjong opened a window into Chinese culture, strategy, communication and community. Through activities like these, students build confidence by using language with purpose, curiosity and cultural understanding.
