Aki’s Artificial Reef Design Reaches the Ocean Floor in Koh Tao
A Year 5 SBS Bangkok student’s dolphin-inspired artificial reef design was selected, built and deployed in Koh Tao through the Global Reef project.
One whole school, one student design, one reef
Most children first meet coral reefs in a textbook. At SBS Bangkok, a Year 5 student designed one — and now it sits on the ocean floor in Koh Tao.
The project began as a whole-school learning experience with Global Reef. Students from Reception to Year 8 explored why coral reefs matter in Thailand, before students across the school were invited to imagine what SBS Bangkok’s own artificial reef could look like.
Aki’s dolphin-inspired design was selected, built from fabricated steel, lowered into the sea and deployed in Koh Tao with the SBS Bangkok logo on it.
For Piers, Founding Director of Global Reef, this is what makes the project so rare: there are “very few places, if any, in the world” where students of this age can take part in a marine and underwater project like this. Marine conservation became something students could see, question, design and connect with in the real world.
