Meet Gary, Secondary Principal at SBS Bangkok

We sat down with Mr Gary, our Secondary Principal, to learn more about his vision for Years 7–13, how he leads learning, and why SBS Bangkok is the right place for students to achieve both academic success and personal growth.

What is your role at SBS Bangkok, and how do you see yourself connecting
with students and parents in this role?

As Secondary Principal, my role is to guide students through the crucial Years 7 to 13 stage of their academic journey, overseeing academic programs, student wellbeing, and overall development. I believe in personally connecting with each student, providing individual support to ensure they feel seen and valued. I am able to do this more effectively by teaching both Year 7 and 8 Humanities and Year 7 Wellbeing, which allows me to get to know students on a deeper level.

Building strong connections with parents is also vital. I see my role as creating a partnership where open communication is essential for student success. When we all share the same vision—students, teachers, and parents—we create the strongest possible foundation for success.

How does SBS Bangkok prepare students for IGCSE and beyond?

SBS Bangkok prepares students for IGCSE and beyond through its three-year Cambridge Pathway Lower Secondary curriculum, which provides both breadth and depth across a wide range of subjects. In Grade 9, students engage in Passion Projects based on Design Thinking, which gives them a taste of the different academic pathways available at the IGCSE level. This process helps them make an informed decision about their IGCSE subject. The lower secondary experience also equips students with the 4 Cs: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Curiosity. These skills are designed to help students succeed in their chosen IGCSE pathway and prepare them for future academic and professional endeavors.

What is your educational philosophy?

My educational philosophy is based on the belief that a successful school is built by putting the student at the heart of all decision-making. Students learn best in an environment where the academic and pastoral domains are equally valued. This integrated approach helps students become well-rounded individuals who strive for their best. I believe learning extends beyond the classroom, fostering a rich community of learners through opportunities on sports fields, overseas trips, and authentic service initiatives. This holistic approach is fundamental to student growth.

I advocate for a growth mindset, where all community members embrace failure as a learning opportunity, believing that improvement comes from sustained effort. A good learning environment is one where students feel safe, known, and that they belong. Fostering a sense of family creates a supportive community where everyone looks out for each other. When relationships break down, Restorative Justice is used to resolve issues and help all parties learn from the experience. Student wellbeing is imperative to quality learning; students learn better when they are happy. Drawing on Positive Education principles, we help students work on their character strengths to flourish in school and beyond. Ultimately, a successful school is well-led, with all staff working together to maintain high expectations in behavior and academic performance. We have a collective responsibility to embrace change and new initiatives that provide high-quality learning, instilling a passion for lifelong learning in the young people in our care.

How do you support student wellbeing during the demanding
secondary years?

During the demanding secondary years, student wellbeing is supported through a comprehensive approach based on the five dimensions of wellbeing:
Physical and Mental Wellbeing, Emotional Wellbeing, Social Wellbeing, Spiritual Wellbeing, and Cognitive Wellbeing.

A key component is the Cambridge Curriculum, which includes a dedicated weekly wellbeing lesson. This is complemented by a caring form tutor who oversees daily student wellbeing. Our enrichment program, featuring service learning and Active8 activities, also supports student development outside of the classroom. Students in Year 9 and above can participate in the International Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. I believe in creating a sense of family where students feel safe, known, and that they belong. When conflicts arise, we use Restorative Justice to help all parties learn from the experience. We also monitor student wellbeing through regular surveys and maintain an open-door policy for students to seek guidance from their tutor or the Secondary Principal. Professional support is also available when necessary, ensuring students are happy and able to learn and flourish.

What role do parents play in secondary education at SBS Bangkok?

Parents are our most valuable partners. A strong, positive relationship between home and school is fundamental to a child’s success. My approach is rooted in transparency and open communication, ensuring parents feel connected to their child’s educational journey. I am always ready to engage, both through formal meetings and informal conversations like coffee mornings. When we communicate openly and share a common vision, we create a powerful support system that empowers students. This collaboration allows young people to build confidence, thrive academically, and reach their full potential. It’s a partnership that ultimately shapes their future. 

What attracted you to SBS Bangkok?

I was initially drawn to SBS Bangkok by its vision to combine academic excellence with a holistic education. The school’s commitment to creating a truly international learning community while providing the necessary structure for students to succeed in exams immediately resonated with me. The opportunity to help build the secondary program from the ground up is both exciting and meaningful. I look forward to leveraging my experience to bring a positive, collaborative mindset to the team to create an environment that supports our students’ development and success. 

Looking ahead, what is your vision for the Secondary School?

My vision for SBS Bangkok’s secondary program is to make it a model of academic rigor and student success in Thailand. I want every student to leave with excellent results, along with the mindset, confidence, and resilience to succeed at university and in life. This vision is built on my educational philosophy of putting the student at the heart of all decision-making. It’s about creating an environment where both academic and pastoral domains are equally valued to help students develop into well-rounded individuals.

We will continue to foster a growth mindset, encouraging students to embrace challenges and see failure as an opportunity for improvement. Learning will extend beyond the classroom through a rich community offering opportunities on sports fields, on overseas trips, and through service initiatives. Our comprehensive approach to student wellbeing is based on the five dimensions: physical and mental, emotional, social, spiritual, and cognitive. This is supported by our dedicated curriculum, caring form tutors, and a planned enrichment program. My goal is to create a true sense of family within the school, where students feel safe, known, and that they belong.

Ultimately, my vision is for a secondary program that not only equips students with the knowledge to succeed in their exams but also with the crucial skills—the 4 Cs of Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Curiosity—to thrive in their future.
